hello.fan vs Google Meet: Paid 1:1 Calls vs Meetings

Google Meet is Google's video meeting service. You start a meeting with a Google Account and share a link or code; others join in a browser at meet.google.com or in the app, and people without a Google Account can join if someone in the meeting lets them in. It handles one-on-one and group meetings well. Translated captions come with some Google Workspace plans, and Google Calendar can take payment for booked appointments on eligible plans.

Google Meet: Video meetings by link or code: a Google Account starts one, and guests join in a browser or the app. · Best for: Scheduled meetings, classes and group calls, especially if you already live in Google Calendar. · Official site

Where Google Meet wins

  • Strong for scheduled group meetings, classes and team calls.
  • Fits right into Google Calendar, Gmail and the rest of Google Workspace.
  • On eligible plans, Google Calendar booking pages can take payment through Stripe.

Where hello.fan wins

  • Fans can call a creator the moment they're online, with no meeting to set up.
  • Per-minute pricing: fans pay per started 15 seconds, only while both people are connected.
  • Creators keep up to 70% of what fans pay, paid to their bank through Stripe.
  • Live translated subtitles in 30 languages on calls.

Can you charge for a Google Meet call?

Not in Meet itself. Google Meet doesn't charge anyone for a call. On eligible Google Workspace plans, though, a Google Calendar appointment schedule can require payment when someone books, through Stripe, and you can hold the session on Meet. That is a fixed price per slot, agreed before the call starts.

That suits a coach who sells hour-long sessions from a calendar. It's a poorer fit when calls are short, unpredictable or spontaneous, because the price doesn't follow how long you actually talk.

hello.fan prices the minutes instead. Each creator sets a per-minute price for video, voice and chat, from 50 to 5,000 credits a minute (100 credits = $1), and fans pay per started 15 seconds while both are connected. Booked sessions inside a creator's working hours are paid up front too, and weekly sessions repeat at the same time every week. If you'd rather keep selling fixed-length sessions, a calendar and Meet do that well. Our guide to getting paid to video chat compares the two set-ups.

Is hello.fan a good Google Meet alternative for one-to-one calls?

For paid one-to-one calls, yes; for meetings, no. Google Meet is built around meetings: someone creates a link, invites people and lets guests in. That's the right shape for a team stand-up or a group class, and hello.fan doesn't try to replace it.

hello.fan is built around a person instead. A creator, tutor or expert has a page at hello.fan/yourname with their topics, languages and prices. Working hours switch them online and offline automatically, and fans who heart them get an alert when they come online. The fan taps video, voice or chat and talks right away.

  • Works in any browser, with no download, plus an Android app that rings like a phone call.
  • Live translated subtitles in 30 languages on calls.
  • Nothing is recorded, phone numbers stay private, and every call has block and report.

The verdict

We make hello.fan, so we're biased, and we'd rather say so. Pick Google Meet for scheduled meetings, group classes and anything tied to your Google Calendar. Pick hello.fan when fans should be able to call you on the spot and pay by the minute, and you want up to 70% of it without setting up a meeting each time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Google Account to use Google Meet?

To start a meeting, yes. Google says you can join without a Google Account, but the organizer or a participant has to let you in. On hello.fan, fans and creators sign up free with Google, Apple or e-mail.

Does Google Meet have translated captions?

Yes, on some Google Workspace plans. Google lists translated captions for certain business, enterprise and education editions, so check their current terms. On hello.fan, calls have live translated subtitles in 30 languages, and chat translates itself.

Can fans call me without booking on hello.fan?

Yes. When you're online, fans can tap to call by video, voice or chat and pay per started 15 seconds. When you're offline, they can book a session inside your working hours, paid up front, or heart you to get an alert.
