What kind of talking can you get paid for?
On hello.fan the conversation is what people pay for, so it can be about almost anything you're good at, within the rules: 18+ only and no adult content, ever. Four kinds of calls come up again and again:
- Advice: careers, study, travel, or a craft or hobby you know inside out.
- Teaching: a quick lesson, a walk-through, or help with one problem someone is stuck on.
- Listening: some people mainly want someone friendly and attentive to talk to.
- Practice: a language, an interview or a presentation they're nervous about.
Say clearly on your page what you talk about, so the right people call. Listening is not therapy, so don't present it as therapy unless you're qualified to offer it.
If you teach for a living, our guide for online tutors goes deeper. For advice-led calls, see the best platform for coaches. We make hello.fan, so treat both as our own picks.
Voice or video: which should you offer?
Both, if you can. They suit different moments, and hello.fan lets you price them separately, with video at or above voice and voice at or above chat.
- Voice suits listening, advice on the go and people who feel shy on camera. You can take it at a desk or on a walk.
- Video suits teaching, showing something and any call where faces help.
A common setup is a lower voice price, with video kept for longer or more involved calls. You can also keep text chat cheap or free as a first step, so someone can check you're the right person before they call.
Live translated subtitles in 30 languages run on calls, which opens your time to people who don't share your first language. For camera days, 21 free camera filters are built in. Billing is per started 15 seconds, only while you're both connected, so a two-minute question and an hour-long conversation are both fair to the caller.
How do you get paid to talk to people regularly?
One-off calls are a fine start, but the calls that add up tend to come from people who return. hello.fan has three tools for that:
- Heart alerts: fans who heart you get an alert when you come online.
- Booked sessions: people can book a time inside your working hours, paid up front.
- Weekly sessions: a regular slot that repeats at the same time every week.
Your working hours switch you online and offline automatically, so you're not on call all day. Outside them, someone can still send an Icebreaker, a one-line hello for 10 credits, or a Super Hello, a gift with a private note. You reply once to each.
A weekly practice partner or a regular advice call is predictable for both of you. At the end of a call, ask what the person would like to cover next time, so each conversation picks up where the last one ended.
How much can you earn talking to people?
There's no fixed figure, and anyone who promises one is guessing. Your earnings come from three numbers: your per-minute price, how long calls last and how many you take. Fans pay in credits, 100 to the dollar, per started 15 seconds while you're both connected. You keep 60% of what they pay, or 70% with a linked store.fan shop on a paid plan.
The labelled example on this page uses voice calls at 120 credits a minute. Your own numbers will differ, because what you earn depends on your price and the calls you take.
Each earning is ready 14 days after it is made. When your ready balance reaches $100, it goes to your bank through Stripe, after a quick ID check.
Know someone else who'd be good at this? For each creator you invite, hello.fan pays you +10% of what they earn for their first 12 months, never taken from them. Open your creator page to start.
How to start
- Pick your topics. Decide what people can call you about, such as advice, a subject you teach, listening or practice, and say it on your page.
- Price voice and video. Set a per-minute price for each, with video at or above voice, and chat cheap or free.
- Set your hours. Choose working hours so hello.fan switches you online automatically, then share your link.
