Can you really video call a creator you follow?
Often, yes, as long as the creator offers it. Wanting to video call someone you follow is completely normal, and a growing number of creators, coaches, tutors, musicians and experts set aside time for live one-on-one calls with their audience. Some do it to answer questions in depth, some teach, and some simply enjoy talking with the people who watch them. What they usually don't want is a surprise call on a personal number or a video call request in their DMs from someone they've never met.
So the first rule of how to video call a creator is simple: go where they take calls. Creators who offer 1:1 time almost always say so, through a link in their bio, a pinned post, or a line in their profile like "call me" or "book a session". If you can't find anything like that, they probably don't take calls right now, and the respectful move is to comment, send one message, or wait.
Where do creators take video calls?
There are a few common setups. Each one works a little differently, and knowing which one you're dealing with tells you what to expect about price, timing and length.
| Setup | How it works | Good for | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live call platform, paid by the minute | You see when the creator is online and call right away; the meter runs only while you talk | Quick questions, a short chat, trying a creator out | Their price per minute for video, voice and chat |
| Booked session | You pick a time slot on a booking page or link-in-bio store and pay up front | Lessons, coaching, longer planned calls | Length, price and the rescheduling policy |
| Membership or community calls | Members get group calls or occasional 1:1 time as part of a subscription | Ongoing support from one creator | What the plan actually includes |
| Recorded video message | The creator records a personal clip and sends it later; there's no live conversation | Gifts and greetings | Delivery time, and that it isn't a call |
If you want a real back-and-forth video call with a creator, the first two are the ones to look for. How do you video call a creator on hello.fan?
hello.fan is the live call platform we make, so read this section as our own product, explained plainly. It's built for exactly this job: live 1:1 video, voice and chat with creators, coaches and experts, paid by the minute. It isn't random matching. You see who is online, what they talk about, which languages they speak and what a minute costs, and you choose whom to call.
- Join free. Sign up with Google, Apple or e-mail. Browsing who's online costs nothing.
- Find the creator. Follow the link in their bio, or open the list of creators online now and look through their topics, languages and prices.
- Check the price. Each creator sets their own per-minute price for video, voice and chat, between 50 and 5,000 credits a minute (100 credits = $1). Video costs the same as voice or more, and some creators set chat to free.
- Add credits. Top up before you call. During the launch, your first top-up comes with 20% extra credits.
- Tap video. Ringing is free. Your browser asks once for permission to use your camera and microphone.
- Talk, then hang up. You pay per started 15 seconds, only while you're both connected. When either of you hangs up, the meter stops.
There's nothing to install. hello.fan runs in Chrome, Safari and Edge on phones and computers, and our page on video chat in your browser covers the details. On Android there's also an app that rings like a phone call. On an iPhone it works in Safari today, and the iOS app is on its way.
What should you set up before you ring?
A minute of setup saves you paying for "Can you hear me?" Before your first call, check four things: your camera is at eye level, the light is in front of you rather than behind you, you have headphones or earbuds in, and your browser is allowed to use the camera and microphone. Then write your question on a note next to the screen, and decide how many minutes you want to spend. Our video call tips for your first paid call go through the full checklist, from lighting to what to do if the call drops.
What do you say when the creator picks up?
Creators who take calls are expecting to talk, so you don't need a speech. A good opening has three parts: hello and your first name, why you called, and what you'd like from the next few minutes. For example: "Hi, I'm Sam. I've been following your bread videos and my sourdough keeps coming out flat. Could I show you my last loaf and ask what to change?"
Compare that with "Hey, I'm a big fan, so... what's up?" Both are friendly, but the first gives the creator something to work with in the first ten seconds. Specific questions get specific answers. If you only want to say thank you, that's fine too; say so up front and keep it short.
Tip: Ask your most important question first. If the call runs long or the connection drops, you'll already have the answer you came for.
How long should a first call be, and what will it cost?
For a first call, five to ten minutes is usually plenty. That's enough time for a real question and a proper answer, and short enough to keep the cost predictable. Here's how per-minute billing adds up.
Example: a creator charges 200 credits a minute for video, which is $2 a minute. Billing is per started 15 seconds, so each 15-second block costs 50 credits. A call of exactly 5 minutes is 20 blocks, or 1,000 credits ($10). A call of 5 minutes and 10 seconds starts a 21st block, so it costs 1,050 credits ($10.50).
Prices vary a lot from creator to creator, which is why you always see the price before you call. Our article on how much it costs to talk to a creator has more worked examples, and our guide to hello.fan for fans explains credits, chat and calls in one place.
What if the creator is offline or doesn't answer?
Creators aren't on call around the clock, and that's a good thing. On hello.fan, creators set working hours that switch them online and offline automatically. If the person you want isn't around:
- Heart them to get an alert when they come online.
- Send an Icebreaker, a one-line hello for 10 credits that they can answer once.
- Send a Super Hello, a gift with a private note, which also gets one reply.
- Book a session inside their hours. Booked sessions are paid up front, and weekly sessions repeat at the same time every week.
If a call rings out, it costs nothing. Try again later rather than ringing over and over.
What are the ground rules for calling a creator?
A call with a creator is a conversation between two adults, and everyone on hello.fan is 18+. Stay on the topics they list, keep personal questions polite, and don't ask for their phone number or private accounts. Phone numbers stay private on both sides, nothing is recorded, and either of you can block and report from inside the call. Creators can also earn a Verified badge after an ID check, which helps you know you're talking with the real person. For the finer points on both sides of the screen, read our guide to video call etiquette.
Frequently asked questions
Can I video call a creator for free?
Joining, browsing who's online and ringing are free on hello.fan, and some creators set chat to free. Video and voice calls are paid per minute in credits, at the price the creator sets, billed per started 15 seconds only while you're both connected.
Do I need to download an app to video call a creator?
No. hello.fan works in Chrome, Safari and Edge on phones and computers, with no download. On Android there's also an app that rings like a phone call. On an iPhone it works in Safari or Chrome today, and the iOS app is on its way.
Will the creator see my phone number?
No. Phone numbers stay private on hello.fan, and nothing is recorded. You talk through the platform rather than through your phone line, and both of you can block and report from inside every call if something goes wrong.
What if I get nervous and forget what to say?
Write your question down before you ring and say it in your first sentence. Creators take calls because they want to talk, so a short, specific opener is enough. You can also start with chat or voice before you try video.
