# Video chat on Chrome, on any device
hello.fan runs in Chrome on computers and phones. When a call goes wrong, it's usually a blocked camera, a missing microphone permission or another tab holding the camera.

Quick answerTo video chat on Chrome, open hello.fan, which we make, and allow the camera and microphone when Chrome asks. It works in Chrome on desktop, Android and iPhone with no download, and you call real people you choose, 1:1. If the camera is blocked, click the icon to the left of the address bar, allow Camera and Microphone, and reload.

**Desktop, Android, iPhone** Chrome runs hello.fan on computers and phones with no download.

**Allow once, change any time** Grant the camera and microphone once, and change it later from the address bar.

**Free up the camera** If the camera won't start, close other tabs and apps that might be using it.

**Want calls to ring?** On Android, the hello.fan app rings like a phone call.

## How does video chat on Chrome work on each device?
Chrome looks much the same everywhere, and so does hello.fan inside it. Go to hello.fan, sign up free with Google, Apple or e-mail, see who is online, pick a creator, coach or expert, and choose video, voice or chat. How you set it up depends a little on the device.

- **Desktop.** On a Windows PC, a Mac or a Chromebook, Chrome uses your built-in webcam or one you plug in. A computer is the comfortable choice for longer calls, like a lesson or a coaching session.
- **Android.** Chrome works with no download. If you'd like calls to ring like a phone call, the hello.fan app on Google Play does that.
- **iPhone.** On your iPhone, hello.fan works in Chrome or Safari, no app needed. The iOS app is on its way.

On every device you get the same calls: 1:1, with 21 free camera filters and live translated subtitles in 30 languages. For phone-specific setup, see our pages on [video chat on Android](https://thebestplatform.com/video-chat/android/) and [video chat on iPhone](https://thebestplatform.com/video-chat/iphone/).

## How do you allow the camera and microphone in Chrome?
The first time you call, Chrome shows a small prompt saying hello.fan wants to use your camera and microphone. Click **Allow**. Chrome remembers your choice for the site, so you won't be asked on every call.

If you clicked Block, or you're not sure what you chose, here's where to change it:

- **On a computer:** click the icon to the left of the address bar while you're on hello.fan. Switch Camera and Microphone on, or set them to Allow, then reload the page.
- **Choosing a device:** if you have more than one camera or microphone, pick the right one in Chrome's settings, under privacy and security, then site settings.
- **On Android:** tap the icon to the left of the address bar, open Permissions, and turn on Camera and Microphone.
- **On an iPhone:** open the Settings app, find Chrome, and switch on Camera and Microphone.

Reload hello.fan after any change. A permission switched on while the page is open often doesn't take effect until the page loads again.

## Camera blocked in Chrome: what usually fixes it?
If Chrome has permission and the camera still shows black, something else is usually in the way. Work down this list:

- **Other tabs using the camera.** Another tab with a video call or a camera test can hold the camera. Close it, then reload hello.fan.
- **Other apps using the camera.** Desktop video calling and meeting apps, and some camera apps, can keep hold of it even in the background. Quit them fully.
- **System privacy settings.** On a Mac, open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Camera, and make sure Chrome is switched on. On Windows, open the Camera privacy settings and allow desktop apps to use it.
- **The hardware.** Some laptops have a privacy shutter or a camera switch. Plug an external webcam back in if it came loose.
- **A fresh start.** Quit Chrome completely and open it again. Installing the latest Chrome update can help too.

Still stuck? Try Safari or Edge on the same device to see whether the problem is Chrome or the camera itself. Our [browser video chat guide](https://thebestplatform.com/video-chat/browser/) has more general tips.

## Why can't the other person hear you on Chrome?
If the other person can see you but not hear you, the microphone is the culprit. The usual causes are simple.

- **The wrong input.** Chrome may be listening to a microphone you're not using, such as a webcam mic instead of your headset. Pick the right one in Chrome's site settings.
- **System privacy.** On a Mac or a Windows PC, the system can block Chrome's access to the microphone even when the site is allowed. Check the Microphone privacy settings.
- **Wireless earbuds.** Bluetooth earbuds sometimes connect to another nearby device instead of yours. Reconnect them before you call.
- **A muted headset.** Many headsets have a mute button on the cable or the earcup.
- **Echo.** If the other person hears themselves, use headphones instead of speakers.

Fix it before you call if you can. Ringing is free, but once you're both connected the meter runs, billed per started 15 seconds. If something breaks mid-call, hang up, sort it out and call back, or switch to chat with the same person. - **Free the camera, then call.** Close other tabs and apps that use the camera, pick someone online and call.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why does Chrome say my camera is blocked?
Chrome doesn't have permission for hello.fan, or your computer's privacy settings block Chrome. Click the icon to the left of the address bar, allow the camera, check your system camera settings and reload the page.

### How do I unblock the microphone in Chrome?
On hello.fan, click the icon to the left of the address bar and switch the microphone on, then reload. If it still doesn't work, check that the right microphone is selected and that your system allows Chrome to use it.

### Can another tab stop my camera from working?
Yes. A tab or app that is already using the camera can stop hello.fan from getting it. Close other video calls, meeting apps and camera tabs, then reload hello.fan.

### Does video chat on Chrome work on an iPhone?
Yes. On your iPhone, hello.fan works in Chrome or Safari, no app needed, and the iOS app is on its way. If Chrome can't use the camera, switch on Camera and Microphone for Chrome in the Settings app.

### Do I pay while I'm fixing my camera?
Ringing is free, and you only pay while you're both connected, billed per started 15 seconds. So test your camera before you call; if it fails mid-call, hang up, fix it and call back.
